Falsifier checks#
Each post separates checks of historical calculations from follow-up tests that use later observations, and says when each can be made. We record the outcome of each follow-up test here whether we were right or not.
| Post | Claim | Falsifier | Check date | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Post 1: US residential electricity prices | July 2026 was 6.0 percent above the 2016 to 2019 real baseline mean in the recorded data vintage; the claim tested is that residential electricity is still above that baseline | Check whether August stays above the baseline. At the recorded August CPI-U (334.980), a published price of 17.33 cents per kWh or less would be below the baseline (equality point 17.33109). That would describe August and would not change the July calculation. The test is set against an all-month baseline; August averaged above the all-month average across the baseline years, and on a 2016 to 2019 August-only baseline the equality point would be 17.71 cents. Recalculate July if relevant data are revised. | 2026-10-23, scheduled EIA release | Pending |
| Post 1: EIA forecast | EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook, October 2026, estimates the August 2026 residential price at 18.31218 cents per kWh | Flag an absolute difference greater than 0.10 cents per kWh between the first published August Electric Power Monthly value and the stored STEO value of 18.31218. This tolerance is an editorial choice. | 2026-10-23, scheduled EIA release | Pending |
